Bandish, cheez or gat[1] is a fixed, melodic composition in Hindustani vocal or instrumental music.[2] It is set in a specific raga, performed with rhythmic accompaniment by a tabla or pakhawaj, a steady drone, and melodic accompaniment by a sarangi, violin or harmonium. There are different ways of systematizing the parts of a composition. A bandish provides the literature element in the music, for standard structured singing. In the past many gharanas protected their bandishes from moving out of the family with gross incoherent vocal renditions.[3] In the realm of vocal music, it is often known as cheez.[4]

This composition is a drut khayal by Sadarang and is based on a rather flirtatious theme of the newly-wed bride who wants to be with her husband but is shy and self-conscious in a joint-family setting, surrounded by the prying eyes of her in-laws. In this bandish she begs her husband to stop following her around, as she's afraid her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law could be listening/watching.

Some additional points that may not have been immediately obvious from the video are to do with the division between which aspects of the music are rehearsed and decided beforehand, and which are directed by Veena Sahasrabuddhe as the concert performance takes place. Basically, the students know from rehearsal that they will be required to sing during refrains of the bandish (which they will have learned), and keep quiet while she is singing alap, bol alap, bahlava and tan. If she wants them to sing up or quieten down in the performance, she gestures appropriately. The pace is set by Veena Sahasrabuddhe too: she indicates this by tapping her hand at the beginning, and when an acceleration is required. 2ff7e9595c
